What To Look For In Your Show Hog Feed
What do you need from your pig feed? You need to make sure your pig is receiving all its nutrients to grow and prosper. If you’re feeding out a show hog, we highly recommend you feed a show feed. We’ve outlined here 3 key components you should look for on your feed tag.
At Southern Oregon Feed And Mineral, we are proud to offer high quality show feed designed to grow and prosper your show hog.
Medication
If your feed is medicated, this should be noted on the feed tag. It’s important to know if your feed is medicated as different medications can have bad interactions. Additionally, some medicated feeds could have withdrawal dates.
Please note: to feed a medicated feed, you should have a Veterinary Feed Directive.
Protein Level
The show hog feed’s protein level will be a factor in their speed of growth. For example, most young hogs are fed a starter, which has a high protein percentage (around 19%) to encourage growth. Finishers will have a lower percentage (14-15%).
Does that mean all young pigs should be fed a starter? Not necessarily! But keep reading to learn how to feed to your pig’s body type.
First 3 Ingredients
The first 3 ingredients in your show hog’s feed are the most prominent ingredients. The first 3 ingredients should include:
protein source (soybean meal)
carbohydrate source (corn)
fat source
